Spirit of Carnival 2010
Budding Somerset photographers were challenged to capture the "Spirit of Carnival" during Somerset's annual illuminated carnival season.
The winning entry entitled "Move over Lewis there's a new kid in town" was awarded to Mark Cox, who will receive the 1st prize of a Sony digital SLR camera worth over £250.
2nd prize of a Canon digital compact camera went to Paul Crosier for his image entitled "Carnival is Showbiz"
and 3rd prize of a Sony digital compact camera was awarded to Sue Webber for the image of "The Light Bulb Fitter".
The competition was aimed at anyone interested in carnival, or who gets involved during this annual event. Illuminated carnivals in Somerset are some of the biggest and most prestigious in the world, and not only support many communities and charities across the county, but also bring in considerable economic benefit to Somerset.
Carnival is one of the most well known and popular art forms in Somerset, and one in which we can all take part and be proud of.
The Western Daily Press and Somerset County Council were delighted with all the entries and as well as the winners, you can also see some of the photographs that reached the final shortlist for capturing the "Spirit of Carnival" in this exhibition.
Somerset County Council would like to thank the Western Daily Press for their support with this competition.

Photographer's Comments: Out of all the images I took on the evening I believe this was the shot that summed up the title of the competition - "Spirit of Carnival." I think most people associate the carnival with the big floats and loud music. This image shows that the carnival is much more than that. The image catches the excitement of a little boy in one of the smaller floats as realises he is being filmed for the carnival video.Judges' Comments: We love the expression on the child's face, the vibrant colours, the lighting and all the hustle and bustle going on in the background. This photograph truly captures the Spirit of Carnival! Somerset Carnivals continue by encouraging children from an early age to take part and carry on the tradition in the future. We felt this picture showed just how much fun carnival can be for the younger generation. The winning image will be used for publicity shots and the strong colours, lighting and technical elements, as well as the subject matter, made this the ideal image to take the first prize.
